Description

A festive recipe for Christmas pretzels, perfect for holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)
  • Optional toppings: crushed candy canes, chocolate drizzle, sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  6. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape into a pretzel.
  8. Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Optional: After cooling, decorate with crushed candy canes or chocolate drizzle.

Notes

  • For a softer pretzel, reduce boiling time to 20 seconds.
  • Experiment with flavored salts for a unique twist.
  • Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure water temperature is correct for yeast activation.
