Description
Sausage gravy is a rich, creamy sauce made with savory sausage, perfect for biscuits or as a breakfast dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups whole milk
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned and fully cooked.
- Remove the sausage and drain excess fat, leaving about 2 tablespoons in the skillet.
- Sprinkle the flour over the fat and whisk to combine, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden.
- Slowly add the milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the cooked sausage back to the skillet, along with seasonings, and stir to combine.
- Serve hot over biscuits or your choice of bread.
Notes
- For a spicier version, use hot sausage.
- Can substitute milk with half-and-half for a richer gravy.
- Adjust thickness by varying the amount of flour and milk.
