Description

A traditional Yule log, also known as Bûche de Noël, is a dessert made from a sponge cake rolled with filling and decorated to resemble a log.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate ganache (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 15×10-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  3. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually fold this dry mixture into the egg mixture.
  4. Gently fold in the melted butter and vanilla extract until combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the cake springs back when touched.
  6. While the cake is baking, prepare a clean kitchen towel dusted with powdered sugar.
  7. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and immediately invert it onto the prepared towel. Peel off the parchment paper.
  8. Starting from one end, roll the cake up with the towel. Let it cool completely.
  9. Meanwhile, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
  10. Unroll the cooled cake and spread a layer of whipped cream filling. Roll the cake back up without the towel.
  11. Trim the ends of the log to create a clean cut. Place the log seam side down on a serving platter.
  12. Cover the log with chocolate ganache, using a spatula to create a bark-like texture.
  13. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. Decorate with edible decorations, if desired.

Notes

  • For variations, consider using flavored whipped cream or adding fruit preserves between layers.
  • Garnish with fresh berries or meringue mushrooms for an elegant presentation.
