Description
A traditional Yule log, also known as Bûche de Noël, is a dessert made from a sponge cake rolled with filling and decorated to resemble a log.

- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
- 1/2 cup chocolate ganache (for decoration)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 15×10-inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually fold this dry mixture into the egg mixture.
- Gently fold in the melted butter and vanilla extract until combined.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading evenly. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the cake springs back when touched.
- While the cake is baking, prepare a clean kitchen towel dusted with powdered sugar.
- Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and immediately invert it onto the prepared towel. Peel off the parchment paper.
- Starting from one end, roll the cake up with the towel. Let it cool completely.
- Meanwhile, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
- Unroll the cooled cake and spread a layer of whipped cream filling. Roll the cake back up without the towel.
- Trim the ends of the log to create a clean cut. Place the log seam side down on a serving platter.
- Cover the log with chocolate ganache, using a spatula to create a bark-like texture.
- Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. Decorate with edible decorations, if desired.
Notes
- For variations, consider using flavored whipped cream or adding fruit preserves between layers.
- Garnish with fresh berries or meringue mushrooms for an elegant presentation.
