Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (green, red)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, mix well.
  4. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  6. Roll out dough and cut into tree shapes.
  7. Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes.
  8. Cool cookies completely before decorating.
  9. For royal icing, whisk egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy.
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar until stiff peaks form.
  11. Divide icing and add food coloring as desired.
  12. Decorate cooled cookies with icing.
