Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, mix well.
  4. In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture.
  6. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut shapes using cookie cutters.
  8. Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes.
  9. Let cookies cool completely.
  10. To make royal icing, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form.
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar until the mixture is thick and smooth.
  12. Pipe icing onto cookies and decorate as desired.

  • Allow royal icing to dry completely before stacking cookies.
  • Store decorated cookies in an airtight container.
