Description

Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and rice.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 smoked ham hock
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Soak black-eyed peas overnight.
  2. In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and garlic, sauté until softened.
  4. Add ham hock, soaked peas, water, salt, and spices.
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes.
  6. Add rice and cook until rice is tender, about 20 minutes.
  7. Remove ham hock, shred meat, and return to pot.
  8. Serve warm.
